What is Judo?

Judo is a Japanese sport which was first established in Japan in 1882 by Jigoro Kano. Not introduced to the Olympics 1964, the main objectives of judo (which remain today) was as a means of physical, intellectual and moral education.

Judo is now one of the largest sports practiced all over the world and teaches children and adults movement, coordination, and physical skills as well as building vital inter-personal & social skills.

Rooted in the two principles of maximum use of one's energy (Seiryoku zenyo) and mutual prosperity for oneself and others (Jita Kyoei) the main purpose of judo training is to "attain completion of self and to contribute to the wellbeing of society at large" - a purpose we consider well worth striving for!

Why should you do Judo?

The link between physical activity and learning only grows stronger with the increase in research on it. In addition, "rough and tumble play" has been shown to be the most effective way of stopping hyperactive behaviour in adolescents (Pankeep et al, 2003).

Judo not only provides essential "rough & tumble play", it does so within a sporting context steeped in a moral code that champions: Courtesy, Honor, Respect, Self-control, Friendship, Modesty, Honesty and Courage.

The physical and technical elements of judo provide an amazing environment to 'challenge' oneself. Learning judo will improve all the elements of physical fitness at the same time as improving decision making, self-regulation, focus and reflection.

All this, and making friends! What more could you ask for?
